20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

4. Final Fantasy X

The tenth mainline instalment in Square Enix's legendary Final Fantasy series is often cited as one of the best. Arriving right at the height of the PlayStation 2's popularity, the game was lauded by fans and critics alike after it launched in 2001.

Final Fantasy X takes place in a world called Spira, and stars Tidus, a young, famous 'Blitzball' player from the city of Zanarkand. The beginning of the game sees the city attacked by a giant creature called Sin, which somehow transports Tidus thousands of years into the future.

There, he links up with Yuna, a summoner who is on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin, sacrificing herself in the process, and hopefully restoring peace to Spira once and for all. There's a glaring issue with this plan though- it's a giant lie.

Defeating Sin IS possible, sure, but it never lasts. Sin always reincarnates, and the cycle always begins again. What initially starts out as a quest to save the world quickly turns into a never-ending cycle of sacrifice, and it shifts the game's tone dramatically, strengthening its narrative in the process.
