20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

5. The Stanley Parable

Trying to explain exactly what The Stanley Parable is to someone unfamiliar with it can be pretty difficult. A first person narrative/ exploration game, it explores the concept of free will, as the protagonist Stanley spends his days in a dull office job following instructions. On this particular day, all of Stanley's colleagues have mysteriously vanished into thin air, leading him on a mission of self discovery as he investigates what has happened.

The Stanley Parable's jovial narrator plays a key role in events, often guiding Stanley as to what to do or where to go next. For example, presumptive statements like ''Stanley walked through the door to his left'' will naturally lead players to assume the left door is the one they should take, but in a clever twist, they are free to take the right one if they prefer. It toys with the player's concept of choice and free will- should you blindly follow the narrator's instructions, or do the opposite of what he says?

Instead of one giant lie, the game is made up of multiple lies, cleverly weaving together events and situations to create an all-round memorable experience for players.
