20 Video Games That Mock You For Failing The Tutorial
19. Take Joy, Repeat The Whole Intro Again - We Happy Few
We Happy Few is an action-adventure game set in a retrofuturistic version of England where the population has become addicted to a drug called "Joy" that makes them hallucinate the world as a blissful utopia, even though they’re actually stuck in a gruesome and violent regime.
The game is quite story-heavy, focusing on three different characters trying to escape the illusory serenity of Wellington Wells. To do this, the protagonists first need to see through the lies of their society by staying off Joy, and this decision is how the game introduces you to the storyline of Arthur, a censor working for the local paper.
Mid-work, Arthur begins to experience flashbacks to the traumatic disappearance of his brother, and you’re given the choice to take Joy or try to remember the event. The game obviously wants you to do the latter to start the story, but you do get the option to take your mandatory drug anyway.
If you decide to stay blissfully ignorant, Arthur will swallow the pill and go back to work as if nothing happened.
The game will roll mock credits and essentially end the story shortly after. You're then forced to repeat the whole introduction again as punishment since you clearly didn’t pay attention to what the game you’re about to play is about.
