20 Video Games That Mock You For Failing The Tutorial
18. Reassigned To Alaska - X: Beyond The Frontier
X: Beyond The Frontier is a 1999 space flight simulation game in which you play as Kyle Brennan, an Earth test pilot that ends up stranded in an unknown part of space, called the X-Universe, fighting and trading with the local alien races to find a way back home.
The game is mainly based around piloting your spacecraft, which is why it features an in-depth tutorial dedicated to teaching you the controls. The intro is set right before Kyle’s accidental warp jump, making you complete a brief training by Earth’s mission control.
The tutorial teaches you each action of your ship individually, but if you get bored with it, you can quickly realize that the craft is equipped with weapons, which you can fire at mission control’s mothership.
At this point, mission control will warn you to behave, or they will send you to “man a station in Alaska,” but surely this is just an empty threat, right?
Well, if you attack the mothership long enough, eventually the man coordinating your test will lose his patience and actually sign off on your transfer to Alaska.
A game over screen will pop up, and sad music will start playing to really drive the point that you just traded an awesome space adventure for a post in the most boring place on Earth.
