Long before Duke Nuken Forever became the embarrassing drunken uncle at the wedding, it gestated in the neverlands of Development Hell, establishing itself as the Chinese Democracy of videogames for the current generation. Sure, most of us suspected rightly that it would be an abomination, but all the while as we waited, a few of us clung to hope that it might not be the disastrous outing it turned out to be. Announced way back in 1997(!) it finally arrived in June of 2011 in truly desperate style, like a half-baked 80s rock reunion to the dismay of just about everyone. Currently it stands as the most delayed game ever, though if things continue as they have been, the following six titles are certainly in the process of giving Duke a run for his money. There is certainly cause to wonder if well ever get to even see these games on retail shelves (though the way thats going maybe thats being overly optimistic anyway) or even via digital download. Some of these are still in development despite having been announced over six years ago at this rate George R.R. Martin (notorious for huge gaps between publications) will have knocked out the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series before we get to play these games. In descending order 6) Thief 4 Stealth-action staple Garrett was finally given a long overdue return when Square Enix and Eidos Montreal announced the rather clumsily (and lame) named Thi4f way back in 2009, but weve seen virtually nothing of it since then despite rampant anticipation at E3, PAX and TGS every year after. One has to wonder just what Eidos are up to and if they can take the reins from Looking Glass Studios and Ion Storm well enough to steer this much-loved franchise into the current generation. They certainly did a solid job bringing back Dues Ex last year with Human Revoltuion and we can only hope the Thief franchise has as much success when it makes its return. As yet no platforms have been announced, and given the current attention on the next generation of console gaming, it wouldnt be surprising in the least if Eidos announced they had pushed Thi4f up a peg onto PS4 and XBOX720. God knows stealth games have taken a bit of a hit in the last few years, even calling Metal Gear Solid 4 a stealth game was a pretty big stretch given the scale of its action. Thankfully we have Hitman: Absolution to look forward to in the meantime when it releases in November, but goshdarn wouldnt it be nice to be surprised by more info on Thi4f at this years E3?
