3. Skeleton Wheel - Dark Souls

No one likes fighting an enemy that won't let up for even a second, but Dark Souls' Skeleton Wheels are the dog worst.

Suffering from the same issue as Mass Effect 3's Banshees, Soulsian combat is all about placement, watching animations and looking for an opening. With that in mind, the vast majority of the original Dark Souls is a masterclass in enemies that push you to the peak of challenge, but seldom feel genuinely unfair.

Enter the Skeleton Wheels, which go against the very ethos of the game itself.

Hitting you with such quick succession they'll tear right through your defence unless you spec towards an armour build, Dark Souls' rigid forward-facing camera and general animation priority makes it feel like you're fighting the game itself to keep going.

After you've been killed from off-screen by a handful of the blighters you couldn't possibly have kept track of, just try telling me Dark Souls is "harsh, but fair."
