5. Tails Was Supposed To Be Sonic's Girlfriend
The Theory
One long-running and weirdly popular Sonic theory suggested for years that Tails - Sonic's twin-tailed side-kick - was originally intended to be female and would have been introduced as a love interest for Sonic. This apparently came from the time a games magazine mistook Tails' chest hair as breasts and misgendered him.
The theory also suggested that the song "Sweet Dream" by Dream's Come True was to be dedicated to their relationship.
The Rejection
Sure, it sounds romantic, but it's just not true.
Tails' creator Yasushi Yamaguchi - who won a design competition to get the character into the game - shared a celebratory image on the occasion of Tails' 25th birthday that included some information on the character debunking the theory.
The image included confirmation of how the theory came about and proclaiming that Tails was always intended to be male.
