All the nostalgia.

It feels like it's been an entire lifetime coming - and in one respect, it kinda has - but Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally here, and has been earning rave reviews from critics and fans alike.

Despite Square Enix's rather iffy track record as of late, FFVII Remake is more often than not the reverent and ambitious reimagining of the original masterpiece most were hoping for, not to ignore its padding and sure flaws.

It is a game that knows precisely how to press fans' buttons and milk their nostalgia for every drop it's worth, to the extent that FFVII Remake is absolutely jam-packed with Easter eggs, references, and cutesy nods to the entire franchise.

Some of these references will fly clean over the heads of new players while die-hard fans might spot them, yet others are so subtle as to be missed by all but the most attentive players.

The game is so colossal in its scope that it'll be a while before every last Easter egg is uncovered, so here's what we've stumbled across so far...

20. No Analog Control In The Main Menu

Final Fantasy VII Remake's very first Easter egg occurs before you even start the game proper: the original game's gorgeous main menu has been lovingly recreated down to the finest detail, even to the extent of replicating the 1997 game's limited control scheme.

Because the original FFVII was released almost a year before Sony brought the DualShock Analog controller to market, the game didn't have any support whatsoever for analog sticks.

And so, in a bizarre tribute to that, the remake's main menu also only allows you to navigate using the D-pad of your DualShock 4.

If you're one of the many who instinctively uses the D-pad to navigate menus anyway, you'd probably never even notice.
