One of the more romantic sides of Football Manager tends to occur when your captain, loyal servant and friend decides to hang his boots up after a wonderful trophy-laden career with you at the helm. But, your bond with the player is too strong to break and you offer the 38-year-old a job as a coach or (if you're really impressed with his time at the club) an assistant manager position. Yet, despite him having a wealth of knowledge on the club, dressing room, youth players and tactics the former (now retired) professional does not possess the level of coaching ability that you will need to succeed at the top level. Forming your own backroom staff is an enjoyable part of the game and it should be that retiring players are given much higher coaching attributes if they have been at the club for a substantial period.
