This beloved and often controversial franchise has been wowing players with its addictive gameplay, great action, dense lore, and blood-thirsty heaps of gore since 1992, and it's shown no signs of slowing down any time soon.

With the new game set to be the next big step in the franchise, why not look back at this special gaming series and unpack some of its secrets? Mortal Kombat certainly has a few skeletons in its closet, floors, walls, and everywhere else, so there is a lot to uncover.

There have been plenty of unexpected facts and tidbits throughout the franchise's tenure, and some of them will have your brain explode as if Raiden shot a thunderbolt directly into it.

10. Kano Has Ties To The Terminator & Indiana Jones

The Mortal Kombat series is so filled with iconic villains that it's bursting at the seams. Still, even within this dense roster of baddies, the dreaded Kano stands out. But did you know this menace has a touch of the silver screen about him?

This dastardly villain's design is a big part of his identity, but it was originally going to be much plainer. His iconic metal plate with a glowing red eye was intended to be a simple eyepatch. However, the design was changed to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator. That's right, it's not a coincidence.

This isn't the only example of movie magic playing into Kano.

One of his (and the franchise's) most famous fatalities shows him digging his hand into his opponent's chest and ripping out their heart. This sickening image is memorable, but it's not entirely original, as it was directly inspired by the Kali Ma sacrifice scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The original actor behind Kano - Richard Divizio - was allegedly responsible for this, as he was a big fan of the movies.

It seems Johnny Cage isn't the only Hollywood-inspired fighter in MK.
