6. PaRappa The Rapper

Without PaRappa The Rapper, we might never have gotten all those music games in the early to mid 00s. While dance mats, guitar peripherals and plastic drum kits may now be gathering dust in living room corners, at one time they were a gaming juggernaut.

PaRappa The Rapper was one of the first rhythm based games, and certainly the first to do it well. There were no gimmicky add-ons here either, just good old fashioned controllers.

The lyrics were not on Bob Dylan’s level, but they were catchy and the lighthearted tone fit the art style perfectly. Rapping about topics like chopping onions, baking a cake and waiting in line for the toilet, PaRappa certainly didn’t want for imagination. The storyline was solid too, seeing PaRappa try to win flower Sunny Funny’s love, hence why he needs to learn karate (chopping onions), as well as learn to drive and finally prove his love for her with a sick rap.

Though there were only six stages, the sense of humour involved was more than enough for repeated playthroughs, and beating the game the first time around was necessary to unlock the Cool ranking the next time you played.
