PlayStation Classic: 10 Best Games NOT Included

4. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

The PlayStation is most remembered for the advances it made in 3D technology; the first Crash Bandicoot was even told to drop 2D cutscenes as Sony wanted their flagship title to show off the console’s power. But with Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night, it was also home to arguably the best 2D game ever made.

Yes, there’s contenders to that crown in the form of Super Mario Brothers, Metroid and Sonic, but that’s beside the point. By shovelling all of the console’s power into a 2D game, Konami struck gold. Perhaps yet again, it was pushed aside for the Classic because of its 2D aesthetics. If that is the case, it’s a real shame. Any of the top five here have a genuine shout at being the PlayStation’s best ever title.

It received less than stellar sales at first but has gone on to be recognised as the archetypal Castlevania experience. With iconic lines like ‘What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets’ and hugely engaging gothic level design, it’s a shame fans could be be missing out on this gem not once, but twice.
