PS5 Wishlist: 10 Things Sony's Next Console Must Include
Backwards compatibility would be a good start.
Sony has denied its very existence, but we'll all know there's a PlayStation 5 prototype locked away in one of its super secret research labs.
They probably have 'top men' working on it right now.
Our first official mention of the PS5 came in a recent interview when Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden name-dropped the mythical machine, and probably got a wrist slapping for his efforts afterwards.
Although the company executive gave nothing of any real substance away, the very mention of the PS4's future successor was enough to send the internet into meltdown.
Athough there's still plenty of life in PS4, not least because PS VR and the latest Pro model have beefed up its capabilities, the Sony loyalists are speculating endlessly about what the next generation could hold.
If the industry analysts are to be believed - and they do get things right on occasion - the PS5 will arrive within the next three years, which gives Sony plenty of time to work out how its going to one-up Microsoft.
After all, the PS4 is about to become an inferior machine in the specs department with the Xbox One X on the horizon, so Team PlayStation must pull out all of the stops and include killer features like these.
10. Backwards Compatibility
Nothing sparks a smugness overload in the Xbox camp like the mention of backwards compatibility.
And why shouldn't they milk this one? Omitting the feature from the PlayStation 4 was shortsighted on Sony's part, and Microsoft has capitalised.
The announcement of Xbox One backwards compatibility was greeted with euphoria at E3 a few years back, and MS has delivered on its promises, bringing more and more yesteryear classics to the machine via regular updates.
Sony, on the other hand, continues to rely on its online storefront and the willingness of its customers to purchases games they already own to deliver its retro fix - and it's about time this changed.
The PS5 must offer some degree of backwards compatibility. Complex hardware architectural differences is apparently the reason our PS4s can't run older PlayStation discs, but Sony has to ensure the PS5 supports PS4 discs.
That's assuming the PS5 even has a disc drive...
