It's risky as hell to start innovating in a truly meaningful way after over a decade of releases... or is it exactly what's needed?

Developers Treyarch seem to think the latter, changing everything from making health recovery a dedicated button to framing multiplayer around superhero-esque movesets. It's very much influenced by class-dependant shooters Overwatch and Rainbow Six: Siege, though as the beta and player feedback have attested, Treyarch have pulled it off.

Ditching the single player campaign is a more contentious point, but doing so makes Black Ops 4 feel more independent as a release. The Zombies mode is still in, and we've got the new Blackout battle royale mode too, though we know nothing other than it'll combine multiple maps into one giant landmass.

Succeed or fail, Treyarch know they're trying something new, and with Battlefield V tanking across the board, all eyes are on this to scratch the military shooter itch.
