8 Terrible Games That Didn't DESERVE Sequels

4. Killzone

The original Killzone is nothing if not a cautionary tale of what hype can do to a game's reputation.

Widely touted as a potential "Halo killer," Guerrilla Games' FPS was ultimately a hollow shell - visually and sonically impressive to a point, but an absolute chore to get through due to the sluggish, wading-through-treacle control scheme, generic shooter gunplay, atrocious AI, and excess of bugs.

It's the dull colour greige in video game form, making all the foaming pre-release hype seem that much more ridiculous.

But Killzone nevertheless sold enough for Sony to greenlight a sequel - a sequel which turned a lot of heads with its jaw-dropping reveal trailer at E3 2005, a trailer so mind-bogglingly impressive many (rightly) believed it was pre-rendered.

Yet when Killzone 2 finally landed in 2009, it received near-universal acclaim for its technical achievements and tight gunplay, proving itself a colossal improvement over its utterly lifeless predecessor.

Its commercial success led to two additional sequels, before Guerrilla effectively retired the IP to focus on the Horizon franchise.
