7. Cortana - Halo 5: Guardians

It's no exaggeration to say that Halo's AI companion Cortana is almost as iconic as Master Chief himself, and so when she began to deteriorate in Halo 4, fans felt genuinely crushed ahead of her sacrificial demise at game's end.

But this was clumsily unpicked in Halo 5: Guardians, where Cortana was resurrected and ultimately revealed to be the game's overarching villain, as she attempts to stage a galactic AI uprising in a misguided quest for apparent peace.

While there's probably a version of this story that wouldn't have stung quite so much, ultimately taking a character as well-liked as Cortana and turning her into a generic Skynet-esque villain, especially after she died such a meaningful death in the previous game, was always going to leave a sour taste.
