10 Scrapped Horror Movie Monsters That Would Have Been Terrifying
3. Practical Effects - The Thing (2011)
A slightly different entry on this list now, as it doesn't necessarily focus on a specific creature that was omitted from a movie, but rather how it could have been brought to life. It's once again the debate between practical and computer effects, and on this occasion, practical wins hands down.
The entire horror genre was built on practical effects that both looked great and were relatively cheap, but as the years have gone by and technology has moved on, CGI has of course taken its place in this corner of the industry. One film where it should have been kept at bay was Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.'s The Thing in 2011.
Part of what made John Carpenter's 1982 original so fantastic were the practical effects, and to have replaced them in 2011 with CGI was a travesty. No one going to watch The Thing wanted to see CGI, and certainly not the poor final product the film ultimately boasted.
This was made so much worse by the fact that there were plenty of practical effects made up that would have kept in the spirit of the original, and, in all honesty, looked far better anyway. The irony is that these CGI effects were more expensive and looked worse; the exact opposite of what was needed.
