15 More Horror Movie Endings That Get Worse The More You Think About It

15. Weapons - Catatonia

In Zach Cregger's fantastic horror-mystery Weapons, a town faces a confounding mystery. Every member of a particular elementary school class, bar one boy, ran off in the middle of the night and vanished. Where did they go? By the end of the movie, that question has been answered but the townsfolk certainly aren't any better off.

As it turns out, the witch Gladys (Amy Madigan) used mind control to get the children to run into her basement and stay there. She's also subjected several others to her dark magic, including the parents of young Alex (Cary Christopher), the only member of the class who hasn't disappeared. During the movie's unforgettable climax, Alex resourcefully used Gladys' magic against her and the possessed children kill her, but everyone she's possessed then goes into a state of catatonia - a cruel fate if there ever was one.

Sure, it's mentioned that some of the children eventually started to speak again but they'll still have lost years of their lives. Meanwhile, it's implied that several of Gladys' other victims never recovered, including Alex's parents, and that's not even mentioning the numerous people killed by Gladys actions. The bottom line is this: the people of this town will never be the same again.

Then again, on an emotional level, this was a truthful conclusion. Mass-casualty events such as these always leave psychological scars on those affected and those don't go away just because the cause of the tragedy is dead.
