8. The Wicker Man - The Islanders Are Doomed
Before Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) is sacrificed by the people of the Island of Summerisle, who have become a sinister Pagan cult, he issues a warning to their leader, Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). He warns him that sacrificing him won't bring back the harvest, that the climate of the Hebrides is unsuitable for growing fruit and that the desperate islanders will sacrifice their leader next time.
Lord Summerisle, ever-arrogant, pays no attention, but it's entirely plausible that the islanders would've turned on him next. Even if they hadn't, they would've carried on sacrificing innocent people and remained stuck in a terrible viscous cycle of paranoia, desperation and death. Summerisle had brainwashed the entire island to become a seriously dangerous cult and Howie was probably the first of many deaths - well, if he was the first, that is.
When director Robin Hardy did make a second Wicker Man film in 2011, it was more of a companion piece that unfolded in a different Scottish location, so audiences have never seen what became of the islanders of Summerisle. Nothing good though - we can guess that much.
