20 Awesome Horror Movies With No Sequels

These killer horror movies were one and done.

There's surely no film genre more welcoming to sequels than horror, because if a movie hits with audiences, there's usually a willingness from fans to see at least another movie or two. Or eight.

And so, the overwhelming majority of successful horror movies at least end up with one sequel, especially if they've printed ungodly amounts of money at the box office.

The mileage can of course vary on this - often they're just a craven cash-grab, but sometimes the creatives put in the leg-work to deliver a couple of sequels that are actually worthy of the one that started it all.

And then every so often we'll witness a brilliant horror movie that just... never gets a sequel.

Obviously this often happens because the first film wasn't a success at the box office, offering little incentive for studios to roll the dice on another, but sometimes there just isn't the creative spark from the filmmakers, or perhaps there are more vague, complicated reasons for the sequel never materialising.

And so, for as good as these horror films are, they've all remained pure one-offs - for now at least...

20. Event Horizon

Event Horizon may be far from perfect, but it's nevertheless one of the most atmospheric and unforgettable sci-fi horror films of the 1990s, and proof of what Paul W.S. Anderson is capable of when working with a solid script.

Though the survivors are rescued at film's end, that doesn't change the fact there's still a nightmarish Hell dimension out there for other spaceships to potentially stumble upon.

The reason we've never had Event Horizon 2 is easy, though - Anderson's original film was a sizable box office flop following a tough production, where Anderson regularly bristled up against an anxious studio.

Though the film has been a continually strong seller on home video and Anderson has expressed enthusiasm for a sequel, it still hasn't happened almost 30 years on.

Big-budget sci-fi horror not called Alien is quite a tough pitch to mainstream audiences, after all.

The best fans can hope for is the recently announced sequel comic Event Horizon: Inferno, which takes place 200 years after the film and follows a billionaire who attempts to salvage the remains of the Event Horizon. It's something?
