6. The Entity

The Entity is arguably one of the most unsung horrors of the 1980s - a superbly unnerving film in which a single mother, played to Oscar-worthy ends by Barbara Hershey, is repeatedly sexually assaulted by a poltergeist-like force in her home.

While you might expect the film to conclude with Hershey's protagonist triumphing over the entity somehow, that's not quite what happens - a closing title card simply reveals that the attacks continue but have lessened in intensity and frequency.

That sure sounds like a way to leave the door open for a second go-around, then, but in fairness, The Entity is such a perfectly shaped, brilliantly acted standalone piece that a sequel that basically retrod the same idea would risk hugely undermining it.

Plus, the film's more eerily open-ended conclusion serves as a potent metaphor for the lasting scars left by abuse, and in turn feels like the right jumping-off point for the audience.
