20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises

10. Friday the 13th Part 13

The treatment - or rather, non-treatment - of the Friday the 13th franchise over almost the last 20 years is truly baffling.

The slasher series' last entry was 2009's remake, which, while commercially successful, never received a direct sequel amid both creative disagreements and a lawsuit related to the IP's rights.

The legal issues were settled back in 2021, and though numerous attempts at a new Friday the 13th have since been pitched, only one appears to have gained much traction.

Last July, Friday the 13th rights holders Horror Inc. announced that a "new sequel movie" is on the way, and though they didn't elaborate beyond that, the prospect of a new Friday the 13th finally happening is reason enough to get excited.

The fact that the outfit refers to it as a sequel is especially interesting, leaving fans to speculate over whether it might go the legacy-sequel route in a similar vein to 2018's Halloween.

Either way, it's been too damn long without Jason slashing up the screen, and while A24 is set to release the prequel TV series Crystal Lake later this year, it's ultimately a movie that most fans seem more interested in. And if it's even halfway good, it'll likely make Friday the 13th a pop culture juggernaut once again.
