20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises

4. The Amityville Horror Reboot

The original 1979 Amityville Horror is an undeniably iconic haunted house movie, but because the Amityville murders actually happened and Amityville is a real town, enterprising filmmakers have been able to produce their own low-budget knock-offs with impunity, so long as they don't use the branded phrase "The Amityville Horror."

Some of the more outrageous examples include Amityville Vibrator, The Amityville Moon, Amityville Cop, and yes, Amityville in Space.

But as we all know, when you're waiting for a bus, two always come at once, and so there are currently two serious-minded attempts to revive the Amityville franchise for the big screen.

First up, Deadstream filmmakers Joseph and Vanessa Winter were announced to be directing Amityville, which has been described as a bold reimagining of the original story for a new generation. And then mere months later, Lights Out and Until Dawn's David F. Sandberg was set to direct a reboot of The Amityville Horror itself.

Now, given the plaudits of these filmmakers, there's a solid chance that at least one of these movies - if not both - delivers the goods, and in turn brings Amityville back to mainstream prominence after decades on the skids.
