20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises

5. Happy Death Day to Us

Time loop horror-comedy Happy Death Day was a huge surprise hit in 2017, enough that a sequel was swiftly given the green light, with Happy Death Day 2U releasing just two years later in 2019.

Though well-received by critics, the sequel failed to repeat the storming success of its predecessor, a combination of it shifting into goofier sci-fi territory and releasing in an extremely crowded window against stiff competition.

This led Blumhouse to cool on the idea of a threequel until April 2025, when writer-director Christopher Landon confirmed that a third film, Happy Death Day to Us, had finally been given the go-ahead.

Landon is a pragmatic enough filmmaker that he will likely address the creative wobbles of the second movie by skewing back to a more horror-centric vibe this time around, which, with a better release date, could very well reignite mainstream interest in the franchise.

After all, regardless of whether we get any further Happy Death Day movies after this, the concept is just too good to die out entirely, and would make for a killer TV show centered around a new character.
