10 Albums That Should Have Never Gotten Big
2. Around the Fur - Deftones
Before any of the Deftones faithful get all bothered by the inclusion of this, Around the Fur is by no means a bad album. Far from it, in fact, with most of these songs being up against some of the best that the nu metal genre had to offer around the same time like My Own Summer and Be Quiet and Drive. There's only one problem though...the world didn't deserve to have this as their introduction to this band.
From day one, Deftones were always known to play around with their song ideas, taking everything from shoegaze to metal to even trip hop moments in places. So, why the hell did everyone mistake them for just an all out metal band at the outset? Well, since the riffs from Stephen Carpenter were already pretty weighty, it was pretty easy for the MTV generation to connect the dots.
Hell, the entire success of this album is probably the only reason that we ended up getting the Back to School remix to kick off some parts of White Pony, considering that the label thought the band needed something to play into the nu metal demographic. Even though there's a lot of greatness on here, it can't help but feel like the equivalent to the Bends by Radiohead: a decent start to be sure, but you knew that there were bigger dreams in mind.
