10 Albums That Should Have Never Gotten Big

3. MTV Unplugged - Lauryn Hill

From day one, MTV Unplugged has always been an institution that prided itself on the more intimate side of music. Even though there have been some real showstopping performances that leave little to the imagination, the best side of this show was always when artists revealed a different side of their personality that you had never seen before. Or in Ms. Lauryn Hill's case, maybe a bit too much than you wanted to see.

After winning what seemed like an endless amount of Grammys for her amazing solo debut the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Lauryn decided to keep going while the iron was hot with this Unplugged performance. The only problem was...well...everything. From the minute it starts to the final chords of the last song, you can tell that Lauryn is not doing well, with no backing band to speak of and a squeaky voice that is far from what she could do in her prime.

Although this makes for some decent moments from an insider perspective, it feels a lot more exploitative than it should be in retrospect, with Lauryn clearly breaking down during a handful of songs and taking to talking about her journey rather than actually playing for the people who paid for a ticket. Whereas the next few years already signaled some bumpy roads for Ms. Hill, there's a good chance that it could all be traced back to this one album.
