10 Albums That Were Supposed To Be Great (But Fell Apart)

2. Simulation Theory - Muse

As the 2010's got underway, Muse had certainly not been strangers to the idea of electronic music. While their initial dive down the rabbit hole with The 2nd Law in 2011 met with somewhat of a thud, there was still enough goodwill towards that project to explore it a bit further. However, there's a difference between gradually incorporating something into your sound and just giving up all of your initial instincts.

That's not to say that Simulation Theory isn't even that bad of a record. For what it's worth, some of these songs seem particularly fleshed out, with Pressure and Dig Down sounding like they're meant to be played in stadiums around the world. At the same time, the weird '80s pastiche that's added into this record feels like Muse are just trying to hop on the bandwagon of the nostalgia craze that's been happening thanks to stuff like Stranger Things. This makes for great songs cut between electronic noisy tracks, like the sorry excuse for a chorus on Propaganda.

It's almost a shame that the album is one of the few forgettable in Muse's catalog considering how much momentum they had coming off of their previous releases. With a few years now under its belt, Muse might need a return to their roots in order to get them out of the electronic haze they've found themselves in here.
