10 Albums That Were Supposed To Be Great (But Fell Apart)
3. Chinese Democracy - Guns N Roses
Rock fans around the world have learned not to count on Axl Rose for a long time now. Despite his less than dependable schedule and infamous tirades both on and off the stage, there was still that element of danger that always made Guns N Roses impossible to look away from. Once the other members went away though, the Axl Rose Experience kept tinkering away at the perfect album that no one could imagine.
Seeing how fans waited almost 20 years for the next offering from GNR, to say that Chinese Democracy was anticipated was an understatement. Coming out in 2008, the Guns we came to know had undergone major changes. Crafting more sinister sounding material, this entire record still manages to sound half-baked even after 20 years of cooking. You can tell that the love and care from Axl is there, but the songwriting is paper thin and is replaced with thousands of guitar overdubs to make up for it.
No matter how much Axl might have wanted to be the all-conquering rock god of his glory days, no amount of added extensions are able to replicate the raw honesty that made those initial GNR albums so good. Coming to a whopping $13 million production bill, Chinese Democracy is something a little worse than just being bad....it's entirely forgettable.
