10 Amazing Albums That Will Make You Love Pop Punk Music

3. All Killer No Filler - Sum 41

At the start of the decade, there was a clear dividing line between different styles of rock music. On one end you had the likes of pop punk, and at the other there was the doomy sounds of nu metal, where bands were itching to get heavier and heavier by the day. While there wasn't too much middle ground between each of them, Sum 41 definitely had the chops to pull off some heavier stuff as well.

Going through All Killer No Filler, there's a lot more metallic edge to these songs than you realize, with guitarist Dave Brownsound having some real shredding moments on songs like In Too Deep. This is still a pop punk album though, and the focus is mainly on the snotty teenage attitude on tracks like Fat Lip and Nothing On My Back. Even at this early stage though, you can hear the band slowly starting their transition into something a lot more metallic, like Handle This and Pain For Pleasure hinting at what would eventually turn up on albums like Chuck.

For most of the metalheads listening to this, Sum 41 almost seemed to have two separate careers, having songs that could be played at pool parties across suburbia and also having the chops to play those Maiden and Priest songs that they talked about loving. It might not be the truest form of pop punk from one track to the next, but you're never going to find another track list that's this solid from cover to cover.
