During the late '80s, rock and roll still didn't really know what it wanted to be yet. Although acts like Guns N Roses were making the poodle hairs on MTV look a lot more superficial, grunge was still underground in 1990, and there was no real new blood taking over the charts just yet. Before Kurt Cobain started his reign as alt rock's king though, Britpop actually got its start a few years early with the La's debut record.

Belonging to the more indie side of British rock and roll, the songs of Lee Mavers almost stood out as a poppier version of something by the Smiths, with John Power as his partner in crime on second guitar. While it's a shame that they only put out one record, it's a miracle that we even have the one album, with Mavers scrapping almost every session before finally giving in and producing something in 1990.

What we got ended up being one of the more perfect pop albums of the '90s, containing one hook after another on songs like There She Goes and also giving a blueprint for future Britpop bands a few years later. The good times didn't last long though, as Mavers started to get more and more meticulous over studio sessions and Power eventually leaving to form Cast after not being able to contribute what he wanted. For a brief moment though, they were the biggest power players in the underground, and you better believe that Noel Gallagher was listening.
