10 Amazing Classic Rock Inspired Albums From The 21st Century
4. Pretty Odd - Panic At The Disco
If you ever ventured into a Hot Topic in the mid 2000's, you probably heard the name Panic at the Disco much more than you probably wanted to. Even though the band's presentation on their debut A Fever You Can't Sweat Out was a bit goofy, it still produced some great tunes.
With people expecting more danceable rock music on the band's follow-up, many were shocked to hear more classic rock centric cuts on Pretty Odd. Instead of building on their trademark emo sound, songwriter Ryan Ross decided to make a record that felt like a pop punk answer to folk rock. Brendon Urie's cuts like "Folkin Around" feel like they could be off a Crosby Stills and Nash record, while songs like "Behind the Sea" owe more than a few nods to the Beach Boys.
Even the more poppy material on the record like "Nine in the Afternoon" are beautifully orchestrated with different vocal harmonies, which gives the album a bit of a Beatles-like tinge. Sure, the lyrics are still in the more pop-punk style of the day, but the record's sounds pull from some of the most timeless rock and roll that was ever produced. Though Pretty Odd was met with a bit of confusion at the time of release, this is probably the one Panic at the Disco record that will truly stand the test of time.
