10 Artists Who Refused To Be In The Rock And Roll Music Hall Of Fame
3. Sex Pistols
In one of the messiest rejections of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the group faxed a letter to the institution, which co-founder Jann Wenner happily read to a cheering and laughing crowd. The letter went down very well with the audience and served as one of the entertainment acts that night. Not quite the outcome the band had probably hoped for.
Despite later admitting that they rejected the award due to financial reasons, the group had also commented on how they believed being inducted into the hall of fame ultimately symbolised the end of the road for an artist. The financial excuse is valid as tables cost anywhere from £20,000 upwards, so they should've run with that initially. Instead, they opted to call the ceremony a "piss stain" and that they refused to be "your monkey" with regards to the committee.
It's definitely a messy way to do it, but the band did make a few valid points that were unfortunately overshadowed by their grammatical errors and use of vulgar language. That's rock and roll, baby! What more did you expect from a punk band that claimed to be the musical version of anarchy?
