10 Bands Who Survived A Lead Singer Change

4. Mother Love Bone

When the 90's got started, rock was about to be taken over by bands from the rainy city of Seattle. From all the prospective heavy-hitters, Mother Love Bone was the band that seemed to be poised for stardom thanks to frontman Andy Wood's undeniable star power. Unfortunately, tragic plans were around the corner when Wood died of a drug overdose before the band's debut had hit shelves.

Many of the band members considered ditching the band, arguing that Wood was the soul of the band. Once the band parted, main contributors Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament decided to give music one more shot. After scouring the city for singers, a demo tape fell into the hands of Eddie Vedder, who in turn wrote songs to Gossard's music.

Once they connected, the three met in Seattle with blues guitarist Mike McCready and helped form the foundation of what would be one of the best 90's bands. Out of respect for Wood, the band decided to change their name to Pearl Jam as they went on to massive success as one of the kings of grunge. Even if the band is under a different name, the members of Pearl Jam have never forgotten the legacy of Mother Love Bone.
