Now, I'm going to mention this more than once so might as well use this absolute beast from the flawless, 'Master Of Puppets', to illustrate my point. Kirk Hammett is an expert in paying close attention to what the music underneath is doing and, more specifically, the rhythm guitar, when he composes his guitar leads. He could have got away with just totally going a million miles an hour here, but actually decides to go the tasteful route, and break up the shredding with some real nice melodic runs. The whole minute that is devoted to Hammett's solo is a total journey, featuring his expertise with the pentatonic scale and some lovely sections featuring overdubbed hamonies too. He manages to add to the overall feel and tone of this eight minute masterpiece, that stands out as my highlight of MOP.
