10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s
The 2010s brought some absolutely amazing cover songs.
Music changed a lot over the course of the 2010s, what with the advent of streaming and the sudden realisation that people were never going to pay full price for music ever again, but one thing that remained consistent throughout all the chaos was the humble cover song.
With access to older music now easier than ever, more modern artists were able to put their own spin on classics from the past, both inside the rock genre and elsewhere on the musical spectrum. Some of these songs were buried deep on albums as mere passion projects for the artists in question, whilst others were displayed loudly and proudly as marquee singles.
The following ten songs cover the length and breadth of what was on offer throughout the 2010s, each one bringing something new and fresh to their respective tunes. Some stay somewhat within the lines of the original, whilst others vary wildly to the point where it's hard to tell that they're even the same song.
Even with the music business evolving at a rapid rate, these songs prove that there is still a place for the oldies.
10. Every 1’s A Winner - Ty Segall
Ty Segall is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who played a major role in the revival of garage rock that occurred during the 2000s. He stuck around into the 2010s and beyond, releasing dozens of albums as part of various bands and under his own name. In 2018, he released Freedom’s Goblin - his tenth solo album in ten years - which contained a cover of a bonafide classic.
Every 1’s a Winner might not be grammatically correct, but it was a massive hit for Hot Chocolate. Segall’s version is less silky smooth than the original, but that’s by design. His style is very rough around the edges and this song weirdly fits that vibe. There’s even a raggedy guitar solo to close things out, which Hot Chocolate wouldn’t have dreamed of attempting.
Segall manages to capture the groovy essence of the original song whilst making it undeniably his own, a rare feat when covering something so popular and beloved. In true Segall fashion, the song two tracks down from this cover on the tracklist is called “When Mommy Kills You”. Never let them know your next move.
