10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s

10. Every 1’s A Winner - Ty Segall

Ty Segall is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who played a major role in the revival of garage rock that occurred during the 2000s. He stuck around into the 2010s and beyond, releasing dozens of albums as part of various bands and under his own name. In 2018, he released Freedom’s Goblin - his tenth solo album in ten years - which contained a cover of a bonafide classic.

Every 1’s a Winner might not be grammatically correct, but it was a massive hit for Hot Chocolate. Segall’s version is less silky smooth than the original, but that’s by design. His style is very rough around the edges and this song weirdly fits that vibe. There’s even a raggedy guitar solo to close things out, which Hot Chocolate wouldn’t have dreamed of attempting.

Segall manages to capture the groovy essence of the original song whilst making it undeniably his own, a rare feat when covering something so popular and beloved. In true Segall fashion, the song two tracks down from this cover on the tracklist is called “When Mommy Kills You”. Never let them know your next move.
