4. Only Women Bleed - Alice Cooper

On first glance, Alice Cooper doesn't really strike you as a person you'd want to bring home to meet your parents. Across his discography, Cooper has practically made it his mission to terrify any authority figure who would consider him detestable, down to the guillotines onstage and the macabre tales he puts in his lyrics. Even though there's enough shock rock to go around on Welcome to My Nightmare, Only Women Bleed hits a lot closer to home.

Being an outspoken advocate for the protection of women, this song is a sad tale of a woman who stays at home only to face the wrath of her husband every night. This isn't done with an ironic twist either, as Cooper croons in the vein of Barry Manilow when delivering this. There's also a little bit of off-kilter craziness in the instrumental accompaniment, as the orchestral arrangements slowly drift downward to paint the grim picture of the lyrics.

There's not many Cooper songs that you could call light-hearted, but this is one of the few in the shock rocker's catalog that could reduce you to tears under the right circumstances. This only proved to be the starting point though, as Cooper up'd the ante on songs like Take it Like a Woman later down the line. Whereas the tone of the song may sound pretty, don't let that trick you into thinking that things have gotten any less dark.
