10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The '90s
2. Earthling - David Bowie
There's sort of an unspoken rule in the music community that no one should tell David Bowie what to do. Regardless of what feedback you might think you have, the man was a musical chameleon who was going to take his music in whatever the hell direction he wanted to. Even though he was a star with Let's Dance just a decade earlier, you would swear that Earthling was made by an entirely different person.
Looking to break out of his traditional roles yet again, this entire record owes its origin to drum and bass music, which was really coming into its own by the time of this record's release. Much like Young Americans did years before, this album serves as an homage to the music that Bowie loved, which made for great chunks of industrial brilliance like Looking for Satellites.
Also, getting Trent Reznor to help with production duties on here was absolutely huge, making a lot of the songs on here really sound like they're on the verge of insanity during their runtime. Even with the smash hit I'm Afraid of Americans saving this record, this deserves to be up with Station to Station as one of the Starman's classic experiments. While no one probably was aching for Bowie to go industrial, this is still a great homage by an artist was all about new horizons.
