10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The '90s
3. Renegades of Funk - Rage Against the Machine
There's a reason why not many covers albums end up becoming the greatest of all time. Unless your name is Johnny Cash, there's no real reason to think that anyone can make a real artistic statement out of just playing someone else's songs. And yet, Renegades of Funk reminded all of us why we fell in love with Rage Against the Machine in the first place.
Coming off of the Battle of Los Angeles, a lot of these things are far more eclectic than you would get from a band like Rage. Though there are some amazing renditions of acts like Cypress Hill and Minor Threat, the best parts of this record are when they take a chance on classic rock like Street Fighting Man or even having the audacity to cover a Dylan tune on Maggie's Farm.
The highlight has to be the Ghost of Tom Joad though, where they take this somber tune by Bruce Springsteen ad create an atmosphere that makes you feel like danger is around every corner. Even though none of the band can take writing credit, each of these songs sound like they could have been Rage songs somewhere down the line. These good times weren't meant to last that long, but still a damn solid note to go out on before shutting down.
