Midnight Oil were one of the most successful Australian bands of all time, with chart hits at home and in America and England through the 80s and 90s. Their frontman, Peter Garrett, was known was his eccentric performances and unabashedly political lyrics. So it wasn't a huge surprise when he dissolved the band in 2002 to pursue political office. He served as an Australian Labor Party MP from 2004-2013 before retiring in solidarity with ousted Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
