10 Must-Hear Dave Grohl Songs

By Hayley May Phillips /

9. Stay Away - Nirvana

When Scream disbanded in 1990, Grohl asked friend Buzz Osbourne of Melvins for advice. Osbourne put him in touch with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, who invited Grohl to Seattle, where he auditioned for the vacant drummer spot in Nirvana. The band had already released their first album, so once Grohl joined, Nirvana began to record their second album, Nevermind. One of the songs from the album was €˜Stay Away€™. Although it€™s definitely not the most famous song from the album €“ the title of which goes to Smells Like Teen Spirit €“ it is still a brilliant song and it shows off Grohl€™s talent as a drummer. Stay Away is one of the only Nirvana songs to open with the drums, with Cobain€™s guitar kicking in later. The pace changes throughout with a mixture of complex rhythms and drum-rolls. The drumming isn€™t the main appeal of the song but this just proves how good the song actually is.
