10 Rock Stars Who Absolutely Hated The Music Business

6. Tom Petty

From the day that he saw Elvis for the first time, Tom Petty seemed to be born to play rock and roll music. Even if he was looked down upon by his father for even trying to do something outside the norm, Petty was about serving himself more than anybody, trying to make his dreams come true and not cowering to anyone who stood in his way. That doesn't work in the world of business though, and Tom was known as the thorn in the side of the music industry for decades.

As laid back as his tunes came across, Tom never seemed to compromise for a second, always standing up for the injustices he saw around him, like filing for bankruptcy once his record label tried to seize the rights to every single one of his songs. The thought of taking on the man like that is already a David vs. Goliath battle, but things started to change once Tom walked away with the rights to his songs, always sticking up for his friends and never settling for anything less than genuine.

He never stopped caring about his fans either, fighting his label tooth and nail to bring down the prices when they tried to raise the cost of his record because they could get more money out of his audience. There's been a lot of time between those years before American Girl, but until his dying day, Tom always remained that rough and tumble kid from Gainsville who never backed down to anybody.
