10 Songs That End On Really Depressing Notes
10. The Talisman - Iron Maiden
Over the years, Iron Maiden have earned and solidified their reputation as one of the greatest bands in the history of heavy metal. They are completely unique, in that no other group of people could pull off as many seven or eight minute plus epics as they have since 1980.
In 2015, on their long awaited album, The Final Frontier, the band demonstrated their ability to tell incredible, albeit depressing stories. The Talisman follows a ship getting lost out at sea, and the struggles and emotions that come with it.
The sailors, after going through an awful storm, find themselves lost with limited food and drink. At one point, they go for 20 days without a meal, and ten without fresh water. It is a horrible ordeal to go through, but eventually they spot land and sail toward it and the safety it would bring.
It is only the final words of the last verse that stop the listener feeling happy for the rescued souls. "This sickness I am dying from, never wanted it to end this way." After surviving the storm and the weeks lost at sea, the sailor returns to land only to die of a sickness anyway.
