4. Metallica Released Lulu

There's not much to say about this one, but the very fact that Metallica collaborated with Lou Reed on Lulu and actually released it to the general public stands as a point against them.

While experimentation is to be praised, Metallica managed to release an album so critically savaged (and so mind-numbingly awful) as to render the €œit was just a phase!€ argument null and void.

The album received dozens of one and two star reviews from critics, with a writer from Grantland hilariously summing it up:

"If the Red Hot Chilli Peppers acoustically covered the 12 worst Primus songs for Starbucks, it would still be (slightly) better than this."

Not only that, but James Hetfield became so defensive of the album that he stated it was just being criticized by people "typing from their mom€™s basement that they still live in". Ouch.
