8. The Murder Of Florence Nightingales God-Daughter
Florence Nightingale Shore was the god-daughter of the famous lady with the lamp who worked as a nurse in Sunderland, England. Florence was born in 1865 and attended boarding school in York before completing her education in Belgium. She then relocated to China where she worked as a governess for three years before returning to England and training as a nurse.
The life of a victorian nurse was not easy and Florence would have been expected to work long hours for just £10 a year plus board. In 1920, Florence boarded a train traveling to Sussex where she planned to meet friends for a short holiday at St Leonards. While aboard she was attacked and severely beaten, dying from her injuries just days later. A nationwide investigation was launched with an unnamed man in a brown suite becoming the lead suspect in the case. Unfortunately, despite the polices best efforts to try and find Florences killer and bring them to justice, both the reason behind the attack and the identity of her attacker remain a mystery.
