In the United States, the availability of affordable 16mm cameras and projectors created an industry that produced and exhibited silent films that graphically depicted a wide range of sexual activities. By the 1920s, stag films had become so popular that they were screened at American Legion halls, college fraternities and politically conservative institutions. The creators of such films often took them on tour, charging $50 for an hour-long show where hard-core films were screened to a male audience. Far from being held in backrooms and church basements, the shows were booked by respectable organizations whose only stipulation was that the films werent shown to women or minors.
