It's not an embarrassing thing to do, but he doesn't want to seem like less of a man to you. He's so much more comfortable being your rock that he doesn't want to put that pressure on to you when things get too much. But he's only human and from time to time he's going to need to let out that bottled up emotion and would much rather do that on his own in the comfort of Bruce Willis and Armageddon.
