Often called the Million Dollar Highway, the pavement of Highway 550 is rumoured to have been mixed with low grade gold ore back when it was made in the 1920s. The keyword is rumoured. There is no actual evidence of the road containing any gold or anyone prospecting chunks of its pavement in attempts to make a quick buck. It is, however, one of the most scenic routes you can travel in America, taking you through the heart of Colorado.
