5. Doctor Who Celebrates Fifty Years And A New Doctor

After much speculation, discussion and excitement, Tom Baker made his first appearance in Doctor Who since he regenerated into Peter Davison, playing the mysterious Curator in Doctor Who's 'The Day of the Doctor'. David Tennant and John Hurt were also on hand to save the universe, but so was future Doctor, Peter Capaldi announced in August as Matt Smith's successor. And on Christmas Day, viewers saw Capaldi take to the TARDIS for the first time (officially), declaring that he didn't like the colour of his kidneys.

4. Gravity Stuns Critics

One of the big hits of the year, Alfonso Cuaran's Gravity became one of the most talked about films in 2013. The sci-fi flick didn't meet universal praise however, as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted everything that it was technically wrong with it upon release. The scale and cinematography caught everyone else's imaginations though, making the film the biggest original of the year worldwide. If you don't know what the hype's about by the way, that blurry gif really doesn't do the beauty of the film justice.
