We're slowly coming around to the reality that robots are going to replace a lot of jobs, but in our minds, we tend to think of those jobs as the manual labour, the repetitive tasks and the complex calculations. What we don't tend to imagine, is a robot in a caring role.

Surely a robot can't possibly imitate the subtle complexities of human emotion? How could we ever trust a robot to look after our kids?

Well, as it turns out, it's really not that hard to keep a kid alive and entertained, at least in the short term. If you think about how many kids would rather play with an iPad than their sibling, this isn't as much of a surprise.

In 2008, a Japanese retailer introduced a robot to look after the kids whilst the parents shop. Another Japanese robotics company developed the PaPeRo which can recognise faces, tell jokes, have conversations and keep track of your kids using an ID tag.
